They had one daughter Zilpha b 1906 d 1995-6 she married a Mr. Miller. Mortimer married (2) Georgia Cross b. 1875 and then married (3) Luella Nevada Bear b 06-15-1886 in Oakland, Alameda, CA and she died 03-26-1967 in CA. Her father was Abraham Bear and her mother Henrietta Keith. A Gertrude Clark-Keith was suposedly living with a Mrs. M.C. Vennum in 1944 when she was killed in an automobile accident. I am unsure which Mrs. M.C. Vennum this was but assume it must have been #1 or #2 since I don't have a death date for them. Gertrude Clark-Keith may have been related to Luella Nevada Bear since her Mother's maiden name was Keith. You can try e-mailing Diane Forti Mortimer's neice and see if she can tell you anymore. Her e-mail is diane40@netzon.net. Hope this helps.

ROLLIN CROSS DIES AT PARENTS' HOME

Wife and Several Children Mourn Loss of Husband and Father by Tuberculosis

Rollin Cross died Sunday evening, April 4, at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Cross at Rose Lake, after a long illness with tuberculosis. He leaves a young wife and several children, the youngest twin babies in arms.

Rollin was born in Fairmont and lived here practically all his life. Shortly after his marriage he became ill and had spent the last couple of years in a vain quest for restoration to health. For several months he was in a sanitarium in the southwest.

When it became apparent that there was no longer hope he was brought to his parents home to spend his remaining days. Mrs. Cross and the children have been living with Mr. Cross' parents during the husband and father's long illness.

Funeral services will take place at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, with interment at East Chain. Rev. Mr. Pierce will officiate.

From Uncle Donald Cross: Harold worked on the Great Northern Railroad with Rollin V. Cross. He worked between Montana and North Dakota as a brakeman. He was a plastering contractor in Ventura California in 1926. Harold ("Jim") and his wife, Doris, lived well beyond their means and lost everything in the 30's and moved to Oregon. He worked in Cave Junction, Oregon after the town had burned down and was rebuilt in 1934. It was rebuilt with stucco buildings which was what Jim knew best. He then moved to Redwood City, California in 1936. He went broke again in the 40's and then moved to Clear lake, California where he died in the late 50's.

He also said his name was Harold james Blaine (named Blaine because he was born in Blaine Washington

Vincent Hay is Summoned at 59

Vincent Henry Hay, 59, secretary-treasurer of the Fairmont Railway Motors, passed away at the home of his mother, Mrs. Annie Hay, at 117 Tilden, after a lingering illness of a year. Death was due to a heart condition and complications.

He had spent the bulk of his life in Fairmont, born here of parents William and Annie Hay, June 16, 1889. He was educated in the local schools and continued his education at Mankato Commercial college.

Over the years he held a position in the Fairmont National Bank until his marriage to Edice Bassett at Mankato in 1917, and move to Minneapolis where he held various positions, including that of bond salesman for the Federal Reserve Bank.

Following the death of his father in 1926 he returned to Fairmont to attend the financial interests of the family estate. In 1929 he opened the popular "corner cigar store", in the location presently occupied by Mocol grocery. He operated the store until failing health forced him to retire in 1939.

He had served on the board of directors of the Fairmont Railway Motors for a number of years and was elected to succeed the late A. R. Fancher in the office of secretary-treasurer last year.

Mr. Hay was a member and past president of the Rotary, a former member of the Knights of Pythias, and a member of the Episcopal church.

He was an aggressive participant in the war bond drives of WWII, and was vice-commander under Gus Boosalis on the highly successful Red Cross drives during the recent war period.

He is survived by his wife and two children, Wayne of Madison, Wisconsin, and Mrs. Richard (Helen) Connell of Quebec, Canada, and four grandchildren, Therese, Michael, Barbara, and Becky, and his mother, Mrs. Annie Hay.

Funeral services are tentatively scheduled for Thursday, 2 p.m. at the Episcopal church, Rev. Lionel Harrison officiating. Interment will be in Lakeside, in the family plot.

Friends may call at the Olson funeral home until 10 a.m. Thursday, at which time the body will be taken to the church to lie in state until the service.

****A side note from Robbi Hoy

The Order of Knights of Pythias is a great international fraternity which was founded in Washington, DC, February 19, 1864, by Justus H. Rathbone, and embraces more than two thousand subordinate lodges in the United States and Canada, with occasional lodges having been formed elsewhere. The primary object of fraternal organizations is to promote friendship among men and to relieve suffering. Each organization adopts some outstanding principle as its objective. The individuality of an order is determined by its ideal sentiment. The distinguishing principles of the Order of Knights of Pythias are "FRIENDSHIP, CHARITY and BENEVOLENCE".

It bases its lessons and builds it ritual largely on the familiar story of the friendship of Damon and Pythias, who were historical characters living about four hundred or more years before the beginning of the Christian era. They were members of a school, founded by Pythagoras, who was known as the father of Greek philosophy.

To become a member of the Pythagorean Brotherhood, certain very rigorous tests were demanded and applied, some of which are very similar to the ritualistic work of our order today. The object of the organization was the moral uplifting and purification of society. Strict morality, absolute truthfulness, honor and integrity were thoroughly inculcated in the minds of its membership. It was a maxim of Pythagoras that the two most excellent things for man were "to speak the truth and to render benefits to each other" The outstanding feature of the society, however, was the marvelous friendship and loyalty which bound the brotherhood together with hoops of steel, which was so remarkably demonstrated in the incident which forms the historic basis of our order.

Damon had opposed the pretensions of the king of Syracuse, who had gained the throne by fraud, and as a result he was condemned to death. Pythias became a hostage for Damon, while the latter was permitted his liberty to bid his wife and child goodbye. Each was willing to die to save the other's life. Their loyalty to each other, the adventures that beset them, and the outcome of this noble friendship, form the basis for one of the most beautiful stories of history as exemplified in the ritual.

1898

Spanish-American War begins and ends. Sergeant Earl Towers, Mauston, captures 13 Spanish soldiers in Puerto Rico.

MILITARY ORGANIZATIONS AFTER THE CIVIL WAR

In 1883, the unit was designated Company D, 3rd Infantry, Wisconsin National Guard.  Thereafter the Captains who served at different periods were William F. Winsor, W. A. Grimmer and John Turner, Jr., who was in command when the company was called into federal service in May 1898 for the Spanish-American War.

The roster read: ----(list of names) Sgts. Earl W. Towers (more names)

p. 150 Company D left Mauston at the end of April in 1898. They spent a blistering May, June and July marching in the sweltering heat of Georgia and South Carolina.  On July 28, they occupied the city of Ponce in northern Puerto Rico and prepared for action against Spanish troops nearby.  In August they took part in several skirmishes with the enemy, during one of which Sgt. Earl Towers single-handedly captured thirteen Spanish soldiers.

After the Spanish-American conflict, the company was reorganized as Company D, 3rd Wisconsin Infantry, Wisconsin National Guard.  Officers were Captain Gerhardt F. Behnken, 1st Lt. Charles F. Behnken (brothers) and 2nd Lt. Earl W. Towers.

39.  GEORGIE MAYBEL5 SIMONDS (ELIZABETH J.4 CROSS, GEORGE3, JOHN2, JAMES1) (Source: 1920 census, her last name comes from Genforum-Vennum forum.) was born Abt. 1889 in California, and died May 16, 1974 in Monterey, California (Source: Death record.).  She married (1) MORTIMER C. VENNUM Abt. 1906 in California.  He was born April 01, 1873 in California (Source: Death record.), and died August 03, 1945 in Santa Cruz County, California (Source: Death record.).  She married (2) ARTHUR JOSEPH CABRAL Bef. 1960, son of JOSEPH CABRAL and ROSIE.  He was born May 08, 1915 in California (Source: Death record.), and died October 01, 1978 in Monterey, California (Source: Death record.).

Notes for GEORGIE MAYBEL SIMONDS:

From William Miller, Zilpha's son...The story is that when Daisy died...Mortimer was so heartbroken that he soon married Daisy's niece who looked very much like Daisy. Georgia Cross (poss diff last name if she was from one of Daisy's sisters children) was only 16 when she got pregnant with Zilpha. The farming lifestyle and being so young caused her to run off with a musician and then later marry a Portugese man. They lived in Monterey in the 1970's. Georgia's second husband was told that Zilpha was Georgia's sister.

______________________________________

On Georgie's death cert it lists the name and birthplace of father as unknown Jones, USA -this is the man she ran off with (in 1918 as per Diane) after leaving Mortimer-did she tell her second husband that he was her father? Very interesting!! mother was listed as unknown as well, this I find interesting as her mother lived with Georgia and her husband in Monterey when she was very old.

Georgia Simonds Vennum Cabral died of Generalized Peritonitis, perforated small bowel and small bowel obstruction.  Mr. Cabral wrote Zilpha a short letter six months after Georgia had died informing her about the death of her "sister." That was only because Zilpha had sent them a Christmas card which reminded Arthur that he should let Zilpha know.

Oh, my brother Ernest claims that Georgia had a twin sister, the twin sister was supposed to marry Mortimer, but died before the marriage, so as families often did years ago, they replaced the intended bride with her sister Georgia.  Claims they were of Swedish descent.  He went on to explain why Grandpa Mortimer Vennum divorced Georgia, seems that after she gave birth to Zilpha, she climbed out of the upstairs bedroom window and ran away. Ernest claims that Georgia passed herself off as being 28 years younger than she was.  He felt very proud to give me these tidbits of family history.  My brother Ernie is a very joyous person and reminds me of my mother.  Don't know where he got this information, no doubt the twin part came from the fact that Georgia was supposed to resemble her deceased Aunt Daisy, "almost like twins, perhaps."  Tried to share your information with Ernie while on our camping trip, it was impossible, I told him I'd send him what I learned, but I don't think he has the patience to delve into your information which has to be very close to being accurate.

Ada Simonds was four years older than her sister Georgia Simonds, wish we could locate Ada's granddaughters.  Guess I'll start with Bakersfield and an add.  Have you heard anything on the two girls since we communicated last.  I remember them well, the older one had dark hair and the younger one was very fair.  They were Catholics I think, because the girls went to a Catholic school.

Story is that she had 2 daughters. One of them died when she was a young mother and Ada helped her son in law raise their young children.

Notes for DOLORES ELAINE STANTON:

Note written by Dolores...

"This is what I've been told-my parents eloped but later married in the church. This was on May 27, 1916. My dad had been brought up in the Catholic Church, my mother agreed to join but  he wanted no part of it, said he was fed up with it. So I was not baptized later. They were living in a cottage by Bald Eagle Lake. It was called 'The Eagles Nest' many of the family have lived there thru the years but don't know who really owned it.

The night before I was born my mother planted beans so we always used that reference.

When I was a year old we moved to Wahkon and my dad was employed by the Try State Telephone Co. Never learned where he learned the trade as he was a delivery boy for a grocer in White Bear when they married."

She is called Grandma Tom by some of her grandchildren because she owned a cat named Tom

William J Cross born 24 May 1908 in Merrill WI

Married Sylvia Fitting 17 Aug 1928 in Houston Co MN. She was five

months pregnant at the time

They were divorced late in 1929. William had lost his job as a car

salesman and was not supporting his wife.

My grandfather would not let her return home with me unless they were

divorced. The divorce records have been

microfilmed and the record is not where it belongs in numerical

order. It may have been removed by my lawyer to get a copy when

William's estate was probated and was not properly refiled. I have

heard that because mother was a minor my grandfather was actually

appointed my guardian, but I cannot prove that because the divorce

record cannot be found. Mother did not have a copy in her things either.

I was born 21 December 1928

William married-2 Florence Novak 19 Jul 1941 in La Crosse WI. He served

in the army during the war.

They had a son Michael - don't know his birth date.

Florence died before William, but I don't have the date.

William died 19 Jan 1981 in La Crosse WI. He is buried in a new

cemetery on the outskirts of town. It is one that only has flat stones

on the graves and does not allow any headstones or monuments

Poss daughters...

First, we have figured out through census records that Ada only had one child, Alice. In 1920 she was 6 and in 1930 she was 16. So from this we can guess she married about 1935. So, I went to the California site that has some marriages (they start in the 1940's) to see if there was any female Bustamante's who were born between then and 1948 (when Alice died) in Kern County. This is what I have come up with. Maybe something will ring a bell with you.

Alice S. Bustamante born about 1942 married Robert W. Harvey 12/14/1963 Kern

Lina E. Bustamante born about 1947-married William Monroe 10-10-1965 in Kern

Those are the only two possible in Kern. Now I checked Tulare and there was none that fit.
